Gene noticed he was feeling less stable after an injury. He knew that after an initial fall, he was at higher risk of falling again, so he reached out to see what was available through the Area Agency on Aging’s network of community partners. He began regularly attending Tai Chi at his local senior center, and even convinced his friends to come along. Not only does the Tai Chi help him feel balanced and stronger, but it even offers him a sense of calm and relaxation, not to mention some time with his friends. Gene is no longer fearful of falls, as he has found a way to ensure he stays healthy and active for years to come.
One effective way to ensure you are guarding yourself from falls is by participating in Tai Chi or other community programs focused on strengthening and stabilizing your core. These programs are proven to reduce the risk of falls. AAAPP contracts with CARES Health & Wellness Programs to provide free health promotion & disease prevention classes, including A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi, and other courses focused on topics like arthritis, diabetes, mental health, and physical activity.
You can find more about CARES’ offerings in Pinellas & Pasco here.
You can also find free and low cost programs at a variety of local senior centers around our community. Take a look below for several sites that may have courses upcoming.
