To become a community where older adults age in a place successfully and remain independent by eliminating the potential for falls.
The Fall Prevention Coalition of Better Living for Seniors (BLS) is an organization whose goal is to prevent falls among older adults in our community. They meet monthly to address the mission of promoting fall prevention awareness in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Senior members of the community are invited to participate on the Senior Advisory Council as part of the coalition and help determine focus and activities each year. The Fall Prevention Coalition of BLS members are experts in identifying fall risks and appropriate safety measures to prevent falls. They are available to conduct free workshops to groups of all sizes; plan free community events; and provide free educational materials.
History of the Fall Prevention Coalition
The FPC, under BLS, is part of The Falls Free Coalition, organized by the National Council on Aging’s Center for Healthy Aging and is a collection of national organizations and state coalitions working to reduce the growing number of falls and fall-related injuries among older adults. Members recognized it would require a collaborative effort of many individuals and organizations at the local, state, and national level to effectively address this growing public health concern. The NCOA launched its initiative “Falls Free: Promoting a National Falls Prevention Action Plan” at a summit in 2004. From that a National Action Plan was established and four major risk factors were identified with two goals in mind to address for each. The Fall Prevention Coalition in Pinellas and Pasco counties attempts to address the National Council on Aging risk factors on the local level.
